It’s amazing how far sound travels over water on a still morning. Voices of fisherman on a jetty over a half mile away carry over the calm bay. The repetitive drone of the crab boat’s diesel engine marking off his trap placements is the only other sound. The hotter the days the earlier the dog walks begin. The earlier the walks the quieter it can be. After Hurricane Sandy I argued that Higbee was not changing that much, but each morning you can see how nature, the tides, wind and waves change the beach front area of this pristine somewhat under-discovered area of Cape May County.
Heat waves bring foggy mornings to the bay front as well. And with the fog come refreshing cool spots along the walk. Occasionally when the fog clears, a sailboat appears like a ghost ship. Anchored from the night before, it’s masthead light breaks through the lifting fog. How’d we miss that on the walk in? The walk is finished, time to hop in the car and get ready for work.
